A Little Boy With A Big Heart Just Adopted The Oldest Shelter Dog Available

We are all aware of the dogs that call the animal shelter home. They come in all shapes and sizes and sometimes, they have the saddest backstory. That was the case with a 14-year-old miniature poodle. He came to the shelter in 2017 after being dropped off by his family. It seems that they were moving and they didn’t want to take their dog along with them.

The dog’s name is Shey and he waited at the animal shelter for 4 months for someone to come give him a forever home. He was in bad shape, never having been neutered and suffering from terrible dental issues. He was cared for at the rescue and it turned out that he only had one tooth that wasn’t rotted. On top of his dental problems, he was half-blind, deaf and it seemed that nobody wanted to adopt this poor dog.

That is when a special young man named Tristan came into his life. He came to the shelter one night looking for a dog who loved to cuddle. He also wanted a small dog and the shelter staff let him know that Shey was a great match.

Jessica Jorgenson, an employee at the shelter, called Shay super sweet and said he wanted to be close to people all of the time.

Tristen took a seat and waited to meet this little dog. They put Shey right into his lap and the young lad lit up with joy.

The staff saw that it was a comfortable fit right away.

They covered the special needs of Shey with Tristan and he was willing to do everything necessary to care for this dog that was now curled up in his lap.

He understood that Shey might not always be aware of what was going on and he might be slow to react. Tristen was respectful of what Shey could and could not do.

They talked about Shey’s medical history and to everyone’s surprise, he pulled out a digital calendar and started making future appointments for the vet. He even talked about the special spot he had set aside for his new friend.

“He was so mindful of Shey’s special needs,” Jorgenson added. “Tristan is very mature for his age and asked a ton of questions.”

The young boy was ready for a dog and he was also ready to be responsible for his choice of a senior dog.

Today, Shey is at home with this young boy and is very comfortable in his arms.

Shey had to wait 4 months to find his forever home but Tristen is making up for it in a big way.

“Shey is very content,” Jorgenson said. “Cuddling is his favorite thing in the world, and he snuggled right in with Tristan.”
